Truck History
One of the most important factors that you should always check first for a used heavy truck is its history. While not all trucks will come with complete history records, it is possible to obtain them from specialized companies. They will be able to check everything from collision history, damage, part replacements, ownership history which includes length of time the truck was owned by the owners, estimated mileage and anything else that would be considered important information for prospective buyers. Although these detailed history reports are not free, they are certainly worth the cost when considering investing several thousand dollars on used heavy trucks.
Accident Reports
If you happen to find a truck that was previously in an accident, whether the owner tells you directly or through the accident report, it's important to get all of the details of the collision. While it's certainly not favorable to get a truck that has been in an accident, it should be expected that many used vehicles would have been in one accident or another, however finding out the severity of the accidents is what you should focus on. Once you find out exactly what all of the details are from the collision, you should then check if any or all of the parts that were affected were replaced. Besides relying on an official accident report, you should also go over the vehicle to make sure there are no obvious signs of damage since they can lead to problems in the future.
Inspection Report
The most important features of heavy duty trucks are the engine, gears, breaks and all of the components required for hooking up trailers. Make sure to thoroughly check all of these parts to ensure a safe vehicle, otherwise you may find yourself with mechanical failures that could potentially endanger you and others around you.
Most companies will ensure everything is properly checked and maintained, you should also check it yourself to give you the peace of mind that the purchase is a good one.
If you do find that some of the part may require replacements in the near future, consider the final price of the truck to see if it's worth it or consider continuing your search with other used heavy trucks.
Digital Odometers
When it comes to used trucks, there are two main types of odometers that you will find for indicating the mileage. One type is the analogue odometer, which will usually be found on older model used heavy trucks and the others are digital odometers, which are found in all of the new models. The biggest problem that many people had in the past was incorrect odometer readings from sellers manually rolling back the mileage so it would seem less than it really was, however these days the law has cracked down on this practice, so it is rare to find these days.
Whenever possible, it's recommended to choose a truck with a digital odometer, just to stay on the safe side and trust that it has the correct mileage recorded. This will indicate how much the truck has been used and how much wear and tear the engine and other parts have had.
